Matthew ‘Fast’ Fotia is an up-and-coming fast bowling coach. Rising through the ranks of junior representative cricket from RDCA Mitchell Shield in 2006, to the lofty heights of the Australian Under 19 side in 2013 and 2014, Matt has had exposure to some of the best bowling coaches around, spending time under and developing his skills with coaches such as Craig McDermott, Glenn McGrath and Tim McCaskill.
The Ringwood Cricket Club opening bowler has been playing the game since the age of six. Whether he is writing about it, training, playing, or coaching, cricket is a major part of Matt’s life.
Matt specialises in adding pace to a bowler’s arsenal. He believes that, for a fast bowler, there are three key components:
- The Run-Up
- The Jump
- The Action
‘Fot’ applies methods of training to get everything moving towards its target, to optimise pace and consistency, and to minimise the risk of injury.
Matt considers the players he coaches as friends first, clients second, bonding with players of all ages over a mutual fascination with cricket, and of bowling fast. His favourite aspect of coaching is hearing about his kids’ performances from weekends gone by.
“I love seeing a young girl or fella beam with pride when they tell me about how well they did; how they did what we worked on, and how good it made them feel.”
Matt preaches the importance that every person – and every fast bowler – is different, and that people embrace their quirky actions or habits. He wants his students to walk away from their lessons with an understanding of what it’s going to take to get to the next level.
“The best bowling coaches I’ve had, explained to me that my action wasn’t textbook, but stressed that it was a GOOD thing. Rather than work on making my action ‘normal’, we found out what worked for me to get the best out of myself.
Breaking it down into simple processes has helped me a lot, and it’s much easier to learn that way, rather than trying to blend it all together at once.”
If you’re looking to improve your accuracy, consistency or just flat out pace, Matt ‘Fast’ Fotia is the man for you.
